Jakarta has revealed another hidden business success story in the form of Bluelounge; a multi award-winning design studio, known for innovative and sleek products such as Milo, The Sanctuary and the ubber elegant StudioDesk.

Started by a Swiss expatriate around 10 years ago, Bluelounge has grown into a thriving international business with clients in over 30 countries, including North America, Japan and Sweden. Interestingly, all the design work takes place in Bluelounge’s studio in Dharmawangsa.

Apple & Icarus. What happens when rebel brands become mainstream?

Apple spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the 80s and 90s creating an image of being the rebel alternative to Big Blue (IBM) and their PC drones. With Mac books being the default choice for most consumers these days, Apple is flying dangerously close to the sun, becoming the Icarus of its time.

After finally put to rest my old yella of a laptop, the simple fact that Mac books seemed to be used by all of my friends and colleagues made me want to look for alternatives. That I did and I quite enjoy pulling it out in public compared to the common mac books I see being used by student to accountants trying to look cool.

I remember reading about Phil Knight (the co-founder of Nike) refer to Icarus and his fear about Nike’s mass popularity in the 80s and 90s. This gave way to brands like Under Armour taking chunks of market share away from Nike and becoming the brand of choice for many.

What will happen to Apple?

As long as Toshiba, Sony, Acer, Lenovo and company, continue to have engineers that focus just on technical features, Apple will continue its time eclipsing the sun. Smells like an opportunity…

New World Order: Outsourcing to America

For the last 6 years, I have used websites such as Elance to access freelance talent from around the world. I have worked with dozens of providers for tasks ranging from research, report writing, legal drafting, animation, website development and preparation of financial statements. For the most part, Elance connected me with highly skilled providers that offered lower pricing and a structured framework that minimized conflict and disagreement. I have typically worked with providers from the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Eastern Europe. This has started to change.

America’s economic slowdown is now starting to affect previously highly priced specialists who are cutting prices and competing ‘toe to toe’ with contractors from traditionally low-cost based countries. I awarded my last two contracts to highly experienced American providers in Silicon Valley and Texas at rates that beat providers from Singapore, India, Indonesia and Australia.

The world has changed with America’s slow down. Where will the ball bounce from here?
